Schizophrenia in Children
Childhood schizophrenia is a serious psychiatric condition that occurs in children under the age of 13. Some may refer to it as early-onset schizophrenia since schizophrenia itself is much more common in adults. Childhood schizophrenia affects roughly 1 in 40,000 children, while as many as 1 in 100 adults can become affected.
Schizophrenia is generally characterized as a psychotic disorder. To be diagnosed, a patient must have either hallucinations, delusions, or some combination of both. In addition to these psychotic features, children suffering from schizophrenia show serious impairments in the ways in which they think, behave, and act.
